Livestock Distribution Program
Our emergency food hampers take the edge off of hunger. But we’ve also taken up a more sustainable approach to food security: livestock.
As a continual source of nutritional care and nourishment for those most in need, we’re currently working to provide vulnerable families in Gadab Hasaasa with at least two livestock animals: one chicken and one sheep or goat. These particular animals are relatively accessible to the area, low maintenance and offer a fantastic number of benefits:
-
Chickens
Chickens provide fresh eggs, are extremely self-sufficient, and their muck serves as a great fertilizer.
-
Goats
Goats offer dairy by way of milk and cheese, provide nutrient-dense manure for fertilization, and make for wonderful natural weed clearers.
-
Sheep
Similar to goats, sheep also offer dairy by way of milk and cheese, and provide nutrient-dense manure for fertilization. But they also make fantastic grazers in small yard spaces!
Here’s how you can help:
Support sustainable food access and security in Gadab Hasaasa by purchasing a chicken, goat, or sheep for a family in need. While the Ethiopian birr inflates every so often, the average cost of each animal in the region is:
Chickens: $10 USD
Goats: $100 USD
Sheep: $100 USD
