Ending hunger in Gadab Hasaasa

We’re a group of Oromo women passionate about ending hunger in the Gadab Hasaasa region of Oromia, Ethiopia.

GHWRA’s mission is to support food security and the growth of sustainable food systems in the region. We envision a (near) future in Gadab Hasaasa where everyone has dignified access to food.

Supporting Widows & Orphans

Food scarcity is on the rise. In Ethiopia, the price of food has skyrocketed, further jeopardizing food access for the most vulnerable individuals in Gadab Hasaasa.

This Ramadan, our particular focus is on supporting widows with orphans by
distributing at least one sheep or goat to their families. There are roughly 147 widows caring for their orphaned children in the Hasaasa area who are especially vulnerable. Our goal is to gift each family a sheep or goat—not for slaughter per se, but rather as a continued source of nutritional care and nourishment.

Please consider making a donation to support widows and orphans this Ramadan. We simply cannot do this work without your help. Every dollar counts.

Our Work in Gadab Hasaasa

  • Ramadan Food Hampers (Gargaarsa Ramadaana Keesaa)

Our work in Gadab Hasaasa first began with this ambitious—and now cornerstone—community project. Every year, we distribute thousands of food hampers to vulnerable folks in the region prior to the start of the blessed month of Ramadan. Five years in, the crisis in global food prices is felt all the more acutely in Gadab Hasaasa, threatening the very capacity of our efforts.

  • Livestock Distribution Program (Horii Horsiisuu)

We’re working to provide vulnerable widows with orphans living in Gadab Hasaasa a set of three livestock: a hen, a rooster, and one sheep or goat. Intended for rearing and food production, these livestock are a self-sufficient source of both nutritional care and, with time, modest income.

  • Women's Grants Initiative (Dubartii Liqaa Kenuu)

As a hand-up approach to more sustainable food access in the Gadab Hasaasa region, the Women’s Grants Initiative is a microfinance program that supports women who are not only breadwinners of their families, but also demonstrate a knack for entrepreneurship, with ideas for a small-scale business they’d implement if given the chance.

  • Urban Gardening & Farming Project (Waa Magarsuu)

If possible, one of the more generative routes to a sustainable food system is growing one’s own food. We’re working to transform largely unused yards into vegetable gardens for vulnerable families in Gadab Hasaasa to grow their own food and produce, offering food access quite literally from the ground up.

Ending hunger in Gadab Hasaasa is possible.

What began as a handful of Oromo women discussing food insecurity in Gadab Hasaasa has slowly grown into a movement of its own.

Our work is anchored by several teams to ensure the most vulnerable in Gadab Hasaasa are at the centre of our efforts: a steering committee in the Oromo diaspora, a community outreach team in Gadab Hasaasa, a council of elders, a team of frontline volunteers… and you, our donors, who help make this work possible!

Give the gift of food access & food security.

We’re a women-led, volunteer-run charity with the goal of ending hunger in Gadab Hasaasa.

Your support would be utterly invaluable as we push towards our goal, particularly given the residual impacts of the pandemic, the current global spike in food prices, and continuing realities of political unrest in Ethiopia.
